Integrating Partnerships into Campaign Strategy

Ready to make every partnership investment work harder?
Talk Strategy
A strategic partnership campaign that transformed the New York City Marathon into a marketing platform for recreational runners across the country.

The Challenge

For brands in the running industry, the New York City Marathon is one of the year's most influential marketing moments. It attracts elite athletes, creators, media outlets, retailers, and some of the biggest brands in endurance sports. Yet many event activations create value only for the people who attend.

The challenge wasn't simply to show up at race weekend—it was to transform that credibility into a campaign that resonated with recreational runners across the country.

At the same time, partnerships, events, PR, paid media, and organic social often operated as independent marketing functions. Without a unified strategy, each channel created value individually, but the overall campaign lacked the cohesion needed to maximize the impact of the company's marketing investments.

Key Observations

Before developing the campaign strategy, several opportunities became clear:
  • The New York City Marathon could serve as the centerpiece of a national campaign—not just an event activation.
  • An existing brand campaign had already established a strong creative platform that could be extended rather than replaced.
  • Partnerships were most valuable when planned alongside the rest of marketing instead of after campaign decisions had already been made.
  • Different partners could contribute unique strengths throughout the customer journey, creating a more complete campaign than any single creator or athlete could deliver alone.
The opportunity wasn't to create more marketing—it was to connect the marketing that already existed.

Strategic Approach

Build One Campaign, Not Five

I developed a unified campaign strategy that aligned partnerships, events, PR, paid social, and organic social around a single campaign vision, shared messaging, and measurable objectives. Instead of each team executing independently, every channel reinforced the same story.

Design Partnerships with Purpose

Rather than selecting partners based solely on reach, I built a complementary mix of trusted voices that each served a strategic role.

A nationally recognized physical therapist established product credibility and educational authority. An endurance athlete competing in the New York City Marathon brought the campaign to life through an authentic race-week perspective. A long-time brand ambassador reinforced trust through years of genuine product advocacy.

Together, these perspectives helped translate an industry event into a campaign that felt relevant to runners everywhere—not just those standing at the starting line.

Maximize Existing Marketing Investments

Instead of creating an entirely new campaign, I extended the brand's existing creative platform into race season, allowing previous marketing investments to continue generating value while creating a consistent customer experience across every touchpoint.

Measure the Campaign as One System

To reinforce cross-functional accountability, I established campaign OKRs and built a centralized reporting tracker that measured collective performance rather than isolated channel metrics. This created visibility into how partnerships contributed to the overall success of the campaign—not just their individual outputs.

Strategic Insight

Partnerships create the greatest business value when they're integrated into campaign strategy—not managed as a standalone marketing channel. When every marketing function works toward the same objective, brands create stronger customer experiences, more efficient content investments, and campaigns that outperform the sum of their parts.

Business Impact

The campaign demonstrated how strategic partnerships can strengthen an integrated marketing strategy rather than simply generate influencer content.

Results included:
  • Achieved the campaign objective of 10 million impressions
  • Produced 10 campaign assets over a three-month activation
  • Activated the brand at the New York City Marathon
  • Secured local television coverage featuring one of the campaign athletes
  • Created alignment across partnerships, events, PR, paid social, and organic marketing
  • Extended the value of existing marketing investments through unified campaign planning

Following the campaign presentation, the CEO remarked:
"Now that's how you plan a campaign!"
